Safety and security are very important to every business. As we head into the holiday season and companies begin to close for the holidays, we implore you to take basic precautions to increase the safety and security of your staff, equipment, and office space. While we are not safety and security professionals and we cannot advise tenants in these matters, we have assembled 10 tips to give you some ideas on how to make your offices a safer place to work. For more specific ideas, please consult a security professional.
1. Establish an Emergency Plan – In the event a situation, such as a burglary, arises, be sure you and your staff have created a procedure, understand it, and are ready to implement it. Preparation is invaluable.
2. Don’t Leave Valuables Out – Unattended valuables left in plain view are invitations to thieves. This is especially important during the holiday break when your office is left unattended for an extended period of time.
3. Report Lighting Issues – Dimly lit areas or burnt out bulbs create environments that can be more prone to crime. In the winter when it gets dark early, quality lighting can make a big difference in comfort. Contact your landlord or property manager to fix lighting issues.
4. Create a Buddy System – If you do not feel comfortable walking alone, wait for someone to go with you.
5. Lock Office Equipment – Keep drawers, safes, and storage rooms locked. Use locking cables to secure computers, screens and other devices to desks. Although locks and cables are not impenetrable, they act as a deterrent and can delay thieves.
6. Use Passwords on Electronic Devices – Using passcode software on computers, phones, and tablets will protect your vital information and can render stolen goods useless to thieves.
7. Review Your Insurance Policy – It is a good idea to periodically review your insurance policy. In the event a theft occurs, make sure you are properly protected.
8. Lower Window Shades When Gone – When no one is in the office, make sure windows are locked, equipment is put away, and window shades are lowered. Open windows with visible equipment are open advertisements to burglars.
9. Report Suspicious Activity – If you see something strange, say something. Typically thieves will have visited their target at least once before committing a crime to check it out. If you see a suspicious vehicle or person, report it to a security guard or police officer.
10. Install a Security System – Security cameras, motion detectors, and alarm systems provide quality security. You can either hire a security company to monitor your system or just install a few cameras to act mainly as a deterrent.
